The Guardian is a minor yet pivotal character of Amphibia. The Guardian is a deity that was placed in charge of watching over the countless worlds in the multiverse. It created the Calamity Gems to see how mortals would handle unlimited power. After countless eons, the Guardian wished to retire. It finally found someone worthy to take its place in Anne Boonchuy, but it agreed to let the girl live her entire human life for 78 more years first, before asking once again for Anne to take its mantle.
Appearance[]
The Guardian's appearance is not completely known, claiming that it would explode the brains of humans that see it. However, a glimpse of it in this form was seen as a cloud of iridescent energy and light. Even though it does not use its true form, the Guardian uses other forms when communicating with Anne; an old-timey computer, Anne's cat, Domino, and a majestic version of her.
As a computer, the Guardian looks like a CRT monitor (specifically the iMac G3) with a keyboard, mouse, and a chat application. As Domino, the Guardian looks identical to Anne's cat, with the only noticeable difference being an occasional white glow in its eyes. The Guardian later takes a much larger form of Domino with a beard, eyes in the form of the blue (right eye) and green (left eye) gems, the pink gem on its forehead, a lot of glittery white fur on its chest, a long furry tail and a pair of large white feather wings.
Personality[]
Despite being "countless eons" old,[1] the Guardian has the behavior of a child, and longs to retire from its duties. Another example of its childishness was resurrecting Anne through unknown and confusing means where it did not give a proper explanation. It is initially desperate and dismayed at Anne refusing the role and it having to go back to its duties. However, the entity was able to recognize those who are truly selfless and was very humble as it allowed Anne to live her life back in the world of the living while holding onto to the hope that Anne would eventually become its successor one day, thus fully resurrecting her.
Background[]
The entity of the stones created the Calamity Gems to see what people would do with the power of these gems. When Anne meets the Guardian, it takes on the form of an old computer, requesting to chat with her, then later Domino, stating its true form would drive humans to madness. When Anne claims she could handle it, a brief glimpse of the Guardian's true form as some kind of pulsating energy being utterly terrifies her. After taking on Domino's form again, the Guardian explains it created a backup copy of Anne before she died and brought her to its dimension where she is not dead or alive. It states that it has been doing the job for countless eons, and it created the stones at least 10,000 years ago. After all this time, it wanted to retire with the hopes of passing its job on to her. It explains that it created the stones as a test to see how mortals would handle unlimited power, but was disappointed by the results. It also says that in the span of 10,000 years after the creation of the stones, Anne is the only person to ever use the stones' power for good, making her worthy of being its successor as the new guardian of the multiverse. When Anne politely rejects its offer, due to believing she'll mess up the multiverse, the deity is initially dismayed and pleading. After Anne gives a speech about learning from her mistakes to be better person, along with stating that she still has a life to live and lessons to learn, the being is encouraged by the prospect of Anne continuing to grow and becoming an even better candidate for the role of Guardian than she is currently. It decides to return her back from the dead, saying that it can wait 78 more years for Anne, implying that when Anne dies at the age of 91 years old, she will be ready to take its role.[1]
Powers and abilities[]
- Omnipotence: The Guardian is a powerful being in the multiverse level and has shown various powers such as:
- Omniscience: The Guardian is omniscient since it is in charge of observing all the dimensions of the universe, not just Amphibia and Earth.
- Immortality: The Guardian is countless eons old and has lived since the beginning of creation, so it cannot die.
- Shapeshifting: The Guardian can change shape at will. Some of the forms it took included an old computer, Domino, an eldritch orb of light, and an angelic version of Domino.
- Prediction: The Guardian can predict the future, as shown when it predicted that Anne would die after 78 long years.
- Power Bestowal: The Guardian has the ability to bestow unlimited powers as the creator of the Calamity Gems and infused its power into the gems to see how mortals would use such power.
- Copying: The greatest feat that the Guardian has done is the ability to make a "backup" of Anne before she dies from the Gem's power, being an exact copy of her with the same memories, thoughts and appearance of the original.
- Resurrection: Another one of the Guardian's greatest feat is the ability to completely revive someone. After Anne humbly rejected its offer to replace it, the Guardian decided to resurrect Anne, returning her to the world of the living where Anne appeared in the same spot moments before she had disintegrated before being brought back to life.
