"Prison Break" is the second segment of the tenth episode of the first season of Amphibia, and the twentieth episode overall.
It premiered on July 2, 2019, alongside "Toad Tax".[3]
Synopsis
Far from Wartwood, Anne and Marcy's friend Sasha is captured by toads.
Plot
The episode begins with a message saying "Far, far away from Wartwood" in red letters. Inside the Toad Tower, Captain Grime is angry with the toads because they have all gotten "soft" and need to toughen up because frogs have been refusing to pay their taxes, causing rebellions all over Amphibia. Sasha is shown in her prison cell crushing a bug who was eating her food with a brick. Percy, the Toad guarding her, comes in delivering fresh rations and performs a dance as a one-man band for Sasha, who talks Percy into quitting his job. Grime comes in and Sasha brags that she got four other toads to leave with Percy being the fifth.

One of the herons.
They eventually see two giant herons nearing toad tower. Percy is walking away, and everyone tries to get his attention to stop him as he was carrying instruments. The herons then start to instantly attack, attracted by Percy as he runs back to the tower. The toads take shelter with Grime being upset, because the toads are not doing anything, too scared of the herons. As a result, Sasha gives Grime advice to compliment the toads instead of saying rude things to them in order to secure their loyalty. Grime then starts complimenting the toads and the toads instantly decide to attack the herons. The toads get rid of the herons and the toads go to have a grand feast.
Sasha then says to Grime that since she helped fight the herons she could go home and find her friends. Grime refuses to let her leave because she's manipulative and offers her to either stay at Toad Tower and become his second in command, or just go wandering in the woods. Sasha agrees to stay, with the episode ending with Sasha pulling out a picture of her and her friends saying she'll find them, but she'll "have some fun with this place first."

Trivia
- Viewership: This episode was watched by 0.50 million viewers on its premiere.[2]
- Aside from the title card, this episode was later uploaded to YouTube on February 14, 2021 as part of a video entitled "Saga of Sasha",[4] making this the second episode, following "Anne or Beast?"/"Best Fronds", to later be uploaded in full to YouTube.
- As of May 2025, this is the only fully uploaded eleven-minute episode to not be uploaded alongside its sister episode and the only fully uploaded episode to not include its title card.
- This is the first episode not to physically feature any of the four main characters of the series.
- Although, if not counting Anne being pictured, this is the first episode where she appears without the other three main characters.
- Albeit indirectly, this is the first episode to mention Marcy since "Best Fronds".
- This is the only episode in which a character named in its synopsis does not appear.
- Although previously debuting in a silent cameo in "Best Fronds", this episode marks the speaking debut of Sasha Waybright.
- The herons in this episode relate to how the heron is the natural predator to reptiles and amphibians.
- This episode continues where "Toad Tax" left off, in which Bog and Fens tell Grime there's another human stranded in Amphibia.
- Despite the residents of Amphibia not being mammals they still use the term Breastplate.
Revelations and significant events
- Captain Grime's name is revealed in the series proper.
- This episode reveals certain things about Sasha:
- She's a cheerleader and a good fighter.
- She's a master manipulator.
- She has the same photo of her friends as Anne.
- Like Anne, she wants to find her friends and go home.
- Sasha has caused several guards to quit their jobs.
- Sasha left twelve clusters of tally marks on the wall of her cell, revealing that she was imprisoned for at least two months.
- This also means that this episode (as well as "Toad Tax") takes place at least four weeks and five days after "Flood, Sweat & Tears", one month before "Anne of the Year" and "Reunion", around two months before "Marcy at the Gates", and three months before "True Colors", "The New Normal", and "Turning Point".
- Percy reveals that the events of this episode and the previous episode take place on a Thursday.
- Assuming that Sasha started counting as soon as she was imprisoned and did not begin another cluster of tally marks, one might think that Anne and Sasha were teleported on a Sunday. However, the opening flashback in "Reunion", which depicts them attending school, disproves this and reveals that Anne's thirteenth birthday fell neither on a Saturday nor a Sunday.
- Furthermore, the flashback in "All In", which takes place the day before the teleportation and also depicts them attending school, eliminates Monday as the day of the teleportation.
- The toads are too afraid of Grime to show up to and properly perform their jobs.
- Grime doesn't understand how to treat his soldiers.
- He also hasn't laughed in many years.
- Grime isn't liked by his soldiers because of his demeanor and belittlement over them.
- Percy likes to have fun and play music for others, and he considers Sasha to be a friend of his.
Continuity
- The "BFFs" photo of Anne, Sasha, and Marcy from the opening and "Best Fronds" makes its last appearance in Season 1, outside of the opening sequence.
- This is also the last Season 1 episode to picture Marcy outside of the opening, although she would later be mentioned in four more episodes.[note 1]
- Anne implied in "Best Fronds" how manipulative her friends could be. Sasha demonstrates said trait in this episode.
- As it became clear in the previous episode, the toads are the rulers over the valley and rule over the frogs.
- The events of the previous episode are mentioned by Grime.
Allusions
- Prison Break - The title of the episode is a reference to the TV series with the same name.
- Star Wars - The beginning of this episode references the beginning of every Star Wars movie.
- Additionally, Disney owns Star Wars.
- Wilhelm scream - When Grime throws a weapon to a toad, the Wilhelm scream is heard.
Edits
- The lines "you imbeciles," "you fool," "crud," and "idiot" were cut during Southeast Asia broadcast.
Errors
- The placement of the clusters of tally marks varies between shots.
- When Sasha says, "Oh, crud!," her mouth movements don't match the line correctly.
- When Grime says, "second in command," his mouth movements don't match the line correctly.
