"Mother of Olms" is the first segment of the thirteenth episode of the third season of Amphibia, and the ninety-seventh episode overall.
It premiered on April 9, 2022, alongside "Grime's Pupil".[1][2]
Synopsis
The crew meets Mother Olm, keeper of ancient prophecies.[2]
Plot
Two olm guards escort Anne, Sasha, and the Plantars to Mother Olm's inner sanctum and as they go lower, they make fun of Hop Pop's age right when the elderly frog's knee gives in, causing everyone to fall which in turn cause the guards to laugh at him even more, making him feel insecure. When the rebels reach their destination, Sprig hits a gong and Mother Olm reveals herself.
When they tell her about King Andrias and the destruction he's causing on the surface, Anne brings up the Calamity Box which Mother Olm remembers is part of an important prophecy, but because of her advanced age, she can't remember what it is. In order to help her fully remember, the gang has to enter Mother Olm's head though her ear (which Sasha is reluctant about because she finds it disgusting) and apply Dr. Yohan's special brain cream directly to her brain. Because he is still self-conscious about his old age, Hop Pop chooses to stay behind. While waiting, Mother Olm assures Hop Pop that he still has value.
After gross encounters with earwax and being electrocuted by the nervous system, the gang finally reach the brain (and find the corpse of Dr. Yohan), applying the cream. Just as they are about to leave, a colony of Batsquitos living in the olm's head attack. The gang leads the Batsquitos out of the brain but fall into the nose. As the Batsquitos fly out of Mother Olm's ear, Hop Pop learn that the kids are in trouble. Using his horticultural knowledge, Hop Pop finds and combines various plants to make Mother Olm sneeze the kids out, saving them. With that, Hop Pop's confidence is restored and is now comfortable being old.
When Anne asks Mother Olm if she remembered the prophecy now, she replies that she still can't, with Sprig discovering the cream expired seventy years prior and was ultimately useless. Hop Pop mentions that before he forgets something, he always writes it down, causing Mother Olm to remember that the prophecy they were looking for was on the ceiling the whole time: "Three stars burning bright, come from beyond to expel the night. Should they fight or embrace the fall, their choice will determine the fate of all". When Anne mentions that Andrias stole the music box, Mother Olm informs the gang that Sasha and Marcy should have powers similar to Anne's, which were taken away because Andrias is misusing the powers of the gems in the music box. She explains that in order to regain the power that is rightfully theirs, they must get the music box back from Andrias. When Anne asks what the prophecy is for, Mother Olm tells everyone that the olms believes that the gems were meant for a greater purpose and should be left alone, but others wanted to use the powers of the gems for conquest, and with their arrogance and greed, created an "unnatural thing" that neither sleeps nor dies and the human girls are destined to save all amphibians from the "worst version of themselves". Anne then thanks Mother Olm for all her help while Sasha asks for a shower, but is horrified when Mother Olm honors her request by gargling a huge cup of tea and spews it all over her while the rest of the gang sidesteps it. Sasha is disgusted, then curiously asks if the tea is Jasmine.

Trivia
- Viewership: This episode was watched by 0.28 viewers on its premiere.[5]
- Running gag: Something gross happens to Sasha.
- This is one of three episodes (the others being "Sasha's Angels" and "Newts in Tights") in which Sasha appears without Grime (eight, if her appearances in flashbacks from "Marcy at the Gates", "The First Temple", "The Second Temple" and "If You Give a Frog a Cookie" and Marcy's hallucination of her in "Olivia & Yunan" are counted).
- Sasha cries out, "But it's gross and I don't wanna!", which is what Sprig says in the "Skin Deep" segment of "The Shut-In!".
- Mother Olm says that a frog has not entered her sanctuary for about a thousand years, possibly referring to Leif's visit with her, taking into account the events from the flashbacks in "The Core & The King", which take place one thousand years prior.
Revelations and significant events
- Anne, Sasha, and the Plantars meet Mother Olm.
- Mother Olm reveals the prophecy surrounding the Calamity Box and the three girls: "Three stars burning bright come from beyond to expel the night. Should they fight or embrace the fall? Their choice will determinate the fate of all".
- This prophecy was hinted by the series' main theme, where the same illustration of the three girls fighting against a creature seen in Mother Olm's chamber is seen as the background for the series' title. The prophecy itself was also first revealed in "A Day at the Aquarium", written in Amphibian dialect when King Andrias shows the book to Anne and her friends.
- This also reveals that Sasha and Marcy were also able to acquire powers from the gems, just as Anne did. Though they have lost these powers for now, the fact Anne retained hers means she can use the Calamity Box to restore them.
- It is hinted that the past Newtopian monarchs abused the power of the Calamity gems and possibly used them along with other things to create the Core or, as Mother Olm puts it, "an unnatural thing that does not sleep and will not die".
Continuity
- This episode takes place immediately after "Olm Town Road".
- Anne mentions the events of "True Colors" as she said that King Andrias stole the Calamity Box from her.
- Mother Olm's prophecy is the same as the one transcribed in the book from "A Day at the Aquarium".
Allusions
- Fantastic Voyage - The group's trip through Mother Olm's body to treat her brain references the plot of this 1966 science fiction film.
