Joe Sparrow is a supporting character of Amphibia. He is a domesticated large size sparrow species bird that served as Marcy's avian steed during her time in Amphibia by flight, using him to travel to and from Newtopia and to the three temples alongside the Plantars.
When Sprig was thrown out of the Newtopia Castle by King Andrias, Marcy used Joe to save him. Later, after Marcy was stabbed, Joe saved Captain Grime and Sasha when they escaped from the castle and became part of the Wartwood Resistance. Ever since then, he has been under Grime's care.
In the show's epilogue, Joe mated with Bessie and had half snail half sparrow offsprings called "Snirds".
Appearance[]
Joe Sparrow resembles a large sparrow similar to its Earth-counterpart, having dark orange wings with a lighter white underbelly as well as a grey beak and feet. Across his left eye is a small pink scar possibly received from a fight of currently unknown origin. Joe Sparrow also wears golden engraved armor with a carved symbol resembling that of Newtopia's flag across the chest as well as a single, green feather protruding from his helmet. Strapped across his back is a wooden saddle capable of carrying up to 4 individuals with 1 having the ability to be transported by being held by his feet.
As of "The Second Temple", he dons a pouch on his chest to carry Hop Pop.
Background[]
Joe Sparrow met Marcy Wu when she and the Night Guards finished their confrontation with the former leader of the Night Guards who became a cult leader, Ernst, at Downblood Island. The giant bird had heard Marcy playing music on her violin and was intrigued by it that he begged her to play her another song which she did. Marcy then asked the bird to help her and the Night Guards get back to Newtopia which he obliged to. After flying the girl and the Night Guards back to Newtopia, the bird decided to stay with Marcy where he was given a full set of armor and the name "Joe Sparrow".[1]
Marcy rode on Joe Sparrow to Wartwood Swamp to go pick up Anne and the Plantars and take them to the First Temple on a mission to charge the Calamity Gems in order to get the Calamity Box working. After charging the Gem, Marcy sends Andrias a message that the first gem has been charge. Unaware to them, this is part of Andrias and his Master's plan to undo the prophecy that brought the girls to Amphibia. Joe Sparrow would return Wartwood later. Marcy rode on Joe Sparrow during her first day in Wartwood and call upon him when New Wartwood was falling apart. During Joe's time on the farm, he develops a relationship with the Plantar's Snail: Bessie.
He was later used as a means of fast transportation between the subsequent temples and Newtopia after the girls were initially supposed to go back to Earth. When Andrias drops sprig from the flying castle, Marcy uses Joe Sparrow to save him and when Grime and Sasha escaped from the castle, he was luckily still around to catch them and fly them safely to Wartwood and later joined the newly formed resistance. Anne, Sasha, and the Plantars later rode on him to Quarreler's Pass to find Mother Olm.
During the final battle against Andrias and The Core, Grime commandeered Joe Sparrow for flight. Joe was later captured along with Domino 2 and lock up in the dungeon with Anne, Sasha, Grime, the Plantars, Yunan, Olivia, and Frobo. Thanks to one of Frobo's upgrades they managed to escape and landed on one of the pools. Grime, Frobo, and the Plantars rode on him to save a girl and her mother from some Frobots and then later head to Saint James Middle School to work on a plan to stop the invasion. Sasha, Yunan, Olivia, and Grime rode on to board the Newtopia Castle in order to shut down the force field.
After the end of the war, Joe Sparrow and Bessie are mated, siring three Snirds.

Trivia[]
- According to a Twitter post from Steve Wolfhard, post director on Disney's Amphibia, Joe Sparrow had a worm pilot named Captain Billy who isn't around anymore for some reason.[2]
- A worm was seen on top of Joe Sparrow, with him licking his beak, in Marcy's Theme Song Takeover, which implies he was eaten sometime before Anne reunited with Marcy in "Marcy at the Gates"
- Joe Sparrow is very similar to Princess Bubblegum's bird "The Morrow" from Adventure Time, where they are both known for giving their owner (& friends) rides.
- He and Marcy do not interact in Season 3.
- Although on the night that Anne returns to life, Marcy sleeps under his wing.

My fav. part of being a retakes director was getting to draw stuff in photoshop and have the assets dropped into finished scenes. I like Captain Billy here, Joe Sparrow's worm pilot who isn't around anymore for some reason”
