My name is General Yunan, Scourge of the Sand Wars, Defeater of Ragnar the Wretched, and the youngest newt to ever achieve the rank of general in the great Newtopian Army!
—General Yunan's introduction, "Toadcatcher"

General Yunan Longclaw[2] is a supporting character of Amphibia. She is a skilled and ruthless warrior, known for her many accomplishments, and for becoming the youngest newt commanding officer to achieve the rank of general in the Newtopian Army.

Appearance

Body

She is a tall pink newt with a slender build, and white-blonde hair that protrudes from the back of her head. She has a more lightly shaded underbelly, and a long tail featuring darker pink spots. Her eyes are yellow with black thin pupils when viewed up close.

Crazy Yunan

Clothing

She wears Newtopian-issued armor made of silver, including two pauldrons patterned with intricate swirling designs, similar to the rest of her armor. Her cape depicts the symbol of the Newtopia flag. Pinned to her chest is her military insignia, boasting her rank as general. Her armor features two long switchblades in each gauntlet. She also wears high-heeled black boots with white fringes on the top.

In the epilogue, Yunan wears a white long-sleeved shirt with frilled ends, a violet pauldron strapped on her right shoulder, black pants, and high-heeled red-violet boots.

Personality

General Yunan is conceited and boasts about her past victories during the Sand Wars, especially her defeat of Ragnar the Wretched, whom she often quotes. She is insane and violent, as well as insightful, as shown by her ability to dupe Percy and Braddock into exposing Grime's location. Nonetheless, her egotistical nature is her hubris that often results in her own downfall, as she gets too invested in introducing herself rather than staying aware of potential threats.

Despite this, Yunan has a sense of honor, as she was conflicted when King Andrias revealed his true intentions, and refused to work for him by "Olivia & Yunan".

Background

Early life

When she was a child, a grubhog grabbed her left arm during a class in the school, almost "ripping it off", which caused her trauma and terror towards grubhogs.[3]

Years later, she joined the Newtopian military's land force, to regain her family's honor that was tarnished by her father, who had abandoned his comrades in a particularly fierce battle.[1] She achieved the rank of general among the army branch at the youngest age yet, working directly for King Andrias. She also fought in the Sand Wars and defeated a foe known as Ragnar the Wretched, whom little is known about.[4]

At some point, Yunan felt that the Newtopian army "slowed her down", so she abandoned them. Ironically like her father did to his comrades.

Meeting Marcy

One day, Yunan visited the Newtopian hospital, where she met a human named Marcy Wu, who had injured herself falling down the stairs. Yunan wasn't dissuaded by Marcy's existence, and even signed her cast.

Sometime later, Yunan was ordered to catch the toad warrior Captain Grime, who had abandoned his post after failing to stop a frog rebellion. She charted a ship called the Green Lady, where she was reunited with Marcy, who was on her own mission to catch a traitorous Captain. However, Yunan was hurt that Marcy didn't remember her, due to her being delirious from her painkillerpillar saliva, and proceeded to treat her coldly for most of the trip.

However, the ship was attacked by a group of pirates, led by Captain Greenbeard, and Yunan and Marcy teamed up to fight them. The two proceeded to wipe the floor with the pirates, until Greenbeard abruptly pleaded them to stop, revealing that he and his crew were actually method actors. Despite the fact that everyone else found this revelation amusing, Yunan proceeded to throw the "pirates" overboard, leaving them at the mercy of some Mantis Rays, which Marcy dealt with to allow them to swim back to their ship.

After a long voyage, Yunan dropped Marcy and her team off at the Dawnblood Islands, where their target was hiding, and told them she'll be back to pick them up once she captured Grime.[1]

Catching Captain Grime

Yunnan

Looking for Grime everywhere, she arrived at Under the Old Log, where Grime's loyal aides Percy and Braddock are. When Yunan asks them if they know about Grime, they deny it, but when she notices them nervous she suspects they know something, so pretending to leave the place she hides on the roof and manages to discover from them that Grime is in the old mill on the edge of the town, so she goes there. When she arrives, she finds Grime and the human girl Sasha Waybright, who try to escape when they see how strong Yunan is. Sasha and Grime, however, decide to fight her, and although Sasha puts up a good fight, Yunan ends up cornering her, but as she gives Sasha her long introduction, Grime pushes her off a cliff and they manage to defeat her, much to Yunan's anger.[4]

Informing King Andrias

The First Temple-01842

Yunan informs King Andrias about the current situation.

She returns to Newtopia and informs Andrias in his throne room of Amphibia's situation having persistent civil unrest, with the toad lords planning a meeting that would spill disaster. Before Yunan can tell Andrias about Sasha's whereabouts, the meeting is cut short when the king receives a letter from Marcy about her success in the First Temple, confusing Yunan once Andrias leaves the throne room.[5]

Toads control over Amphibia and King's true colors

True Colors-00583

Yunan, Polly, and Frobo fighting against the toad soldiers.

After Sasha and Grime overthrew Andrias and took control of Amphibia, Yunan attacks the toads holding Anne's group captive, then tries to introduce herself to them, but quickly gets shut up by Lady Olivia due to the urgency of time. She helps fight off the rest of the toad invasion, and silences Sasha when she attempts to warn Anne of Andrias' intentions at the castle. When Andrias is "about to send the girls home", he reveals his true colors and intentions, leaving everyone in shock, including Yunan. When a battle begins against Andrias and an army of frobots he created, she protects Olivia from a Frobot flung her way by Grime, slicing it in half, before seemingly fleeing the battle with her.[6]

Turning Point00027

General Yunan and Lady Olivia trying to escape from Andrias.

When Andrias retrieved the Calamity Box after mortally injuring Marcy and inadvertently transporting Anne and the Plantars to Earth, Yunan and Olivia tried to use the opportunity to flee the scene but were quickly caught, with the king questioning them whether they were still "with him". Terrified of her liege's true nature and the power which he now commands, Yunan swears fealty to him alongside Olivia. Andrias then ordered the two of them to put Marcy into a rejuvenation tank to save the girl's life.[7]

Rescuing Marcy

Season 3 Episode 7 - Olivia, Yunan and Marcy

Yunan and Olivia rescuing Marcy.

A week later, Yunan continues servicing Andrias out of fear, despite not wanting to be part of his plans. Andrias asks Yunan and Olivia to meet with him on an important matter, and when they open the door and see him seemingly talking to "himself" about how things are professing and about testing a device on someone. As they close the door, Andrias open it and invited them in, Andrias announced that both have been promoted; she round up some frogs to work in those Factories. and Olivia to see the constructions of the refineries and planned to drain all of Amphibia's natural resources. Neither of them wants to follow orders, but they are forced to do so. Olivia then decides to rescue Marcy as she is the only one who can help with Andrias, as she was even able to defeat Andrias in Flipwart, however, Yunan refuses because of her distrust of humans, but ends up agreeing. As they head to where Marcy is, they encounter a Moss Man in the garden in the basement of the castle, and before Yunan can attack him, Olivia tells her that Moss Men are friendly. The Moss Man gives Yunan a flower, and although she is skeptical to take it, Olivia tells her to do so as it's an offering of friendship, and Yunan does so, placing it in her hair. When arrive with Marcy, they found her inside the Healing Tank, and take her out of there, making her wake up from her comatose state.[3]

General Yunan shocked at a Grubhog

Yunan terrified by a grubhog.

As they head to take her out, they suddenly find themselves outside the castle, much to their surprise. There, Olivia ends up meeting "her mother", who is angry at her work protecting Amphibia and ends up transforming into a monster, which makes Yunan wonder what that "witchcraft" is, but Marcy realizes that it is a projection and informs her. When the room is about to take another form, Marcy tells Yunan not to get upset, and Yunan tells her that she doesn't get scared by anything, but that idea changes when she realizes that a grubhog appears. Marcy scoffs at her being scared by a small grubhog, and Yunan tells her about her experience with one as a child, but suddenly more grubhogs appear taking on monstrous forms, and start chasing her. While being terrorized by monstrous forms of Anne and Sasha, Marcy realizes that are some eyes that cause the simulation, so she tells Yunan and Olivia to destroy all of them. They manage to destroy them all, but suddenly they meet King Andrias, who was always watching them, and a creature emerges from the top of the room and grabs Marcy. When Olivia demands to know what they are doing to Marcy, Andrias tells them that the creature is The Core, an ancient entity that is a collection of Amphibia's greatest Minds preserved for eternity. He also tells them that the Core needs a host smart enough to be the best, with Marcy being the best choice; Andrias also tries to get the Core to choose someone other than Marcy, as he had developed a strong bond with Marcy, but the Core refuses. Olivia and Yunan are obligated to watch as Marcy begins to be possessed by the Core, and Andrias tells them that it is time for the Core to take Amphibia to its destiny.[3]

War in Amphibia

After being freed, Yunan and Olivia try to warn them that Marcy was under the Core's control but failed, as they walk into Darcy's trap. While being held captured, Anne tricks the Core into sparing Anne by warning them that if they killed her the remaining powers of the gems will cease to exist. Olivia and the group were later brought to the dungeon as Andrias and the Core begin their invasion on Earth.[8]

When Marcy awakens, she and Olivia join in a group hug with the girls, the Plantars, Grime, and Frobot. After foiling the invasion and capturing Andrias, the group returns to Amphibia, and Lady Olivia then announces to all that both Darcy and Andrias have been defeated, declaring their victory. However, before they can celebrate, Amphibia's moon is coming down thanks to the Core, much to their shock.[9]

Subsequently, Anne, Sasha, and Marcy obtain full powers from the Calamity Box, and manage to defeat and destroy the Core. The girls finally can go home but leaving Amphibia forever, saying goodbye to all their friends there; Marcy has a goodbye to Yunan, Olivia, and even Andrias.[10]

Trivia

  • Her name is usually confused to be "Yunnan", possibly due to it being spelled that was in the captions as well as the Yunnan lake newt.
  • Although Yunan's retractable hooked claws are so sharp that they can slice down things such as plates, trees and regular Frobots like hot knife through butter, they are not as durable and more brittle than Sasha's pink heron sword when the 2 claws on Yunan's right gauntlet shattered in half after constant clashes against Sasha's pink sword as seen in "Toadcatcher".
  • General Yunan is afraid of grubhogs as shown in "Olivia & Yunan", because one tried to bite her left hand off when she was a child.
  • Matt Braly said during a Live Autograph Signing that Yunan and Olivia are married.[12]
  • Despite real life military generals using their last name in their title, Yunan is her first name, meaning that Amphibia's military generals may use their first name in their title instead of their last name.
