Speaker Dialogue
(Scene opens on the Wartwood Farmers Market. Anne is in charge of running the Plantar family's stand. She accepts two copper coins from Mrs. Croaker for buying two carrots.)
Mrs. Croaker: Here you go, dearie.
Anne: Catch ya later, Mrs. Croaker!
Mrs. Croaker: Oh, they'll never catch me! (Laughs as she leaves. Anne sees Maddie using a cauldron at the Flour Breads & Pastries stand.)
Anne: Hey, Maddie! Happy market day!
(Maddie slowly twists her head backwards and smiles eerily back at Anne.)
Anne: (laughs) Classic creepy Maddie. (Notices Sprig hiding in the vegetable basket.) Uh, what are you doing?
Sprig: Hiding. Ever since Maddie and I got engaged, things between us have been... awkward.
Anne: Dude, if you don't want to be engaged anymore, just go break it off.
Sprig: (pops out of basket, shocked) Break up with her? To her face?! (He climbs onto Anne and hides in her hair.) She'll kill me!
(Maddie is laughing maniacally as she starts chopping up long bread. Sprig whimpers, Anne sets him down behind the stand.)
Anne: Look, breakups are no big deal. I used to do it for my friends all the time. They called me the Breakup Queen. Also, Angel of Death.
Sprig: Perfect! You go break up with her for me, and I'll go find a new hiding spot.
Anne & Sprig: Yeah. Spranne against the world!
(They both start having fun until Anne lifts Sprig up in the air and crashes into a saucepot filled with blue moon berries held by a tall blue bucktoothed frog named Barry. The berries are dropped onto a mud puddle.)
Barry: Gracious me!
Sprig: Oops. Sorry about that, Barry.
Anne: I didn't see you there, Barry.
Barry: Shucks, kids. Don't worry about it. (winks) Nothing gets Barry down.
(Barry places his hands behind Anne and Sprig's ears and holds two lollipops out of thin air. They both gasp in amazement and take the lollipops.)
Sprig: Candy magic.
Barry: Have a "Barry" good day. (Chuckles as he leaves. He appears up in his stand named Barry's Berries.) Barry's here! (The crowd starts cheering at Barry.)
Sprig: There goes Barry, sweetest frog in all of Wartwood.
Anne: Swell. And now to break up with Maddie for ya.
(As Anne walks over to Maddie's stand, she stops to see Maddie place doughy figures of Anne and Sprig in a baking oven and shuts the door with a viewing window. The figures let out an agonizing shriek as if being burned and melted alive. Anne narrows her eyes, walks back to Sprig at the stand.)
Anne: Or maybe breaking up by text would be better. (She takes a pencil and paper out of her bag.)
Sprig: (confused) By wha--?
Anne: By text. It's not super cool, but, hey, everybody's done it at least once.
Sprig: (laughs) Now we're both cowards.
(Anne writes a letter that reads:)
"Dear Maddie,
I break up with you.
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
-Sprig"
(She then folds it into a paper airplane.)
Sprig: (amazed) Whoa.
(Anne throws the airplane across the other side and flies onto Maddie's hair. She reads the note, gives an unsettling glare at Anne and Sprig, both smiling and waving nervously. She looks distraught, and leaves.)
Sprig: Huh. That wasn't so bad.
Anne: See? Like I said, no problem. (They both eat their lollipops and high-five.)
(Scene cuts to black. Scene fades back to view a storage shed in an unknown forest. Inside, an unseen frog lights a match from its hand and flicks it under a flaming cauldron. The frog places a piece of string and a sweet into the green concoction, forms Anne and Sprig's faces and whirlpools rapidly. Green smoke rises and forms into a large toad chortling ominously before fading to black.)
(The next morning, Sprig wakes up hearing a rooster crow. Sprig's view is blocked by unnatural hair growth covering his eyes. He stretches with a yawn and touches his eyes.)
Sprig: Huh? Something ain't right here. (Suddenly hears Anne's scream downstairs.) Anne? I can't see. Whoa! (He falls off his hammock, walks out of his room blind.) Whoa! Anne? Whoa!
(Sprig falls down the stairs before getting back up.)
Sprig: Anne, are you okay? Whoa! (Bumps into Anne with feathers grown out of her arms and face.)
Anne: Sprig! What happened to your face? [squawks]
Sprig: Whoa! What happened to your voice?
Anne: It's not just my voice, dude. When I woke up, these things started growing out of me. (Close up of Anne's arm covered in feathers before the scene shifts back to Anne.) And whenever I try to talk, I just-- [squawking, bird calls] What is going on?!
Hop Pop: Morning, kids. Goodness gracious, boy! What's on your face?
Sprig: I dunno. I just woke up like this.
Anne: And me. Anytime I try to talk I-- [squawks]
Polly: (hops downstairs, tired) Have you guys seen my toothbrush?
Sprig: Huh? (Anne chirps and covers her mouth.)
(Polly is silent for a moment before she bursts into laughter.)
Polly: Yes! (Hop Pop grabs Anne's left ear and pulls her down for a close inspection.)
Hop Pop [examines Anne and plucks one of her feathers] Hmm. Woke up like this, you say? (Goes to Sprig and lifts one of his eyebrow hairs.) Hmm...
Sprig: You fixed it! (Hop Pop puts his hair down.) Aw.
Hop Pop: I've seen all I need to. (Polly continues laughing.) You two... have been cursed!
Anne: Cursed? [squawks] That's a thing here?!
Hop Pop: This land of ours is home to many arts, Anne. Sculpture, mosaics, and of course... (sinisterly) THE DARK ARTS!
Sprig: Cursed?! But-but how? When?
Hop Pop: Well, it takes about a night for a curse to kick in. Either of you upset anyone yesterday?
Anne & Sprig: (both gasp to each other) Maddie!
Anne: (Points outside to Sprig.) Dude, you've got to go talk to her.
Polly: Any way you could wait till tomorrow? Because I am loving this.
(Sprig's mouth gets immediately covered in hair.)
Sprig: Hey, I think it's getting better.
Anne: Sprig, we have to go talk to Maddie. Only she can reverse this!
Sprig: (sighs) You're right. Or maybe we can try lifting this curse ourselves, without any awkward conversations.
Anne: Okay, but hurry. I've got a really bad feeling about where this is headed.
(Anne sees a trail of ants on the floor and starts pecking them in a bird-like behavior while squawking.)
(Smash cut to a card reading "3 HOURS LATER". In the kitchen, Sprig is now an entire ball of fur. He tries making a concoction in a cauldron while he reads a book called "So, you've been CURSED". He uses a green bottle to add little drops in the cauldron.)
Sprig: Come on, come on. A little bit of this... (Lifts hair covering his eyes, places a few drops in the cauldron. The concoction explodes in his face and he coughs.) Well, that didn't work either. (Throws bottle away, calls over to Anne reading the Wartwood Gazette.) How you doing over there, Anne?
(Anne sets down the newspaper, reveals she has fully transformed into a big brown bird with a grey beak and bird legs, still wearing her school uniform. Polly and Hop Pop both yelp in shock next to Anne.)
Hop Pop: Anne, are you okay?
Anne: (surprisingly calm) You know, it's actually not that bad. Watch this! (She kneels down on a floorboard, puts her beak into a hole and pulls out a large yellow worm with her beak.) Ha! (She tosses up the worm and gobbles it in her mouth.) Mmm! (immediately frowns) I hate this curse. (hears a small explosion) Huh?
(Sprig is suddenly sent flying across the room from the kitchen and crashes onto a wall. His fur is covered in soot with little flames shown.)
Sprig: (coughing) I think I'm getting closer.
Anne: Sprig, enough is enough. (Walks over to Sprig, pulls him off the wall.) You are going to get Maddie to lift this curse and that's that.
Sprig: (groans) Fine, fine. But it's gonna be sooo awkward.
(Sprig walks to the front door. He opens it to see a gloomy Maddie in front of him, holding a bread basket with Anne and Sprig dough figures.)
Maddie: Got Mr. Plantar's bread order here. (Sprig immediately shuts the door.)
Sprig: Ahh! She's here! Someone hide me. (The door suddenly falls on top of Sprig.)
Polly: RUN! OBJECTS BEND TO HER WILL!
Hop Pop: Nope. That's on me. Forgot to fix those hinges.
(Sprig crawls out of the door and awkwardly faces Maddie.)
Sprig Oh... Hey, Maddie.
Maddie Sprig. (Anne nudges Sprig to Maddie with her head.)
Anne Stop stalling, dude. (Sprig turns to Maddie, smiles nervously.)
Sprig Uh... (Tries to build up courage and raises his voice.) Maddie, I'm sorry for the way I broke up with you! It was wrong of me to have Anne do it, and doubly wrong that we didn't do it face to face.
Maddie (mildly peeved) Well, your breakup literally hit me in the face. But as much as I would've preferred an actual conversation, I was fine with what you wrote.
Sprig (relieved) Oh, thank goodness.
Anne (Flaps her wings to celebrate.) Told ya. Breakup "qua-ween." (A crow flies into the house and lands on Anne's head; it caws.)
Sprig: So can you take these curses off of us? (begs on his knees) Please?
Maddie: Sorry, but I can't. Curses can only be lifted by the caster, and this isn't my curse.
Anne: (squawks in shock) What?!
Sprig: (gasps) But if it wasn't you, then who?
Maddie: (thinks) Hmm.
(Maddie brings out a mortar bowl full of soil, grinds it with a pastel and sprinkles a pinch of minerals on it. She throws a handful of soil onto the floor and a purple cloud of smoke engulfs both Anne and Sprig, coughing. The smoke dissipates to reveal a glowing blue trail on the floor, leading outside.)
Sprig: Hey! (coughs)
Maddie: This trail will lead us to the caster. (Runs off with Sprig and Anne in pursuit.) Quickly! Before it goes cold. (Hop Pop walks to the door, holding Polly on his left hip.)
Polly: You gonna fix this door?
Hop Pop: Eh. Eventually.
(Next scene shows Maddie, Sprig and Anne chasing after the magic trail in the forest.)
Anne: Hup, hup! (Tries flapping in mid-air, but falls flat on the log.) Meh. It's worth a shot. (Continues after them on foot. Sprig uses a hair band to see with his eyes.)
Maddie: Why'd you think it was me who cursed you?
Sprig: Well, you do give off a creepy vibe.
Maddie: Just because I seem creepy to you doesn't mean I'm a bad person. I'll have you know, I learned magic to help people, not hurt them. Sheesh! Appearances aren't everything, Sprig. (Continues running ahead.)
Sprig: (slows down to a halt) Yeah, well that's... (Anne flaps down next to Sprig.) That's a really good point. (The crow pops out of Anne's hair with a caw.)
Anne: Kurt the crow says this will all end in tears.

[grunts] [gasps]

[yelps]

What kind of evil person would live in a place like this?

[all gasp]

Hello, children.

[all gasping] Barry?

[laughs] Enjoying the curse I put on you?

Why, Barry? Why?

Why? I'll tell you why!

Surely you remember barging into me at the market yesterday?

Spilling my entire stock of blue moon berries

that only grow once every ten years.

They were priceless!

I played it cool and was sweet

because my image is half my business.

I may look nice,

but I'm petty and vengeful on the inside.

Yeah, that was our bad. Looks can be deceiving. We get it.

Ah, right, right. The lesson thing. Barry, we're sorry.

Please lift the curse.

You can't see it really, but I'm begging on my knees.

[coos]

Hmm, let me think. Never!

Not only am I petty, but I'm very unforgiving.

As a curse wielder myself, this abuse of magic offends me.

Hmm? Oh, goodness.

You should never curse someone unless they really deserve it.

And, buddy, you deserve it!

[gasps, whimpers]

Ah! Two can play at that game.

-Ha! -[grunts]

[both gasping, grunting]

[barrel squawks]

[growling]

[both grunting]

Ah! My last curse! [growls]

I'm out! What do we do?

Give me a hand. You mean literally?

Or figuratively? Ow!

Ow. What the heck?

[Barry exclaims]

Gotcha!

-Oh, dear. -Ha!

[explosion]

And that's how you fix a door.

[explosion]

Good job.

[coughing, squawks]

Oh, no. My beautiful body.

[all coughing]

We're back to normal! She turned the curses back on him!

Maddie, you did it! I can talk!

All right, you crazy kids bested me.

Now go on, turn me back.

Nothing doing. You're way too dangerous.

[caws] What? You can't just leave me like this.

Aw, come on, Maddie. We did him wrong.

[sighs] Fine. I'll change him back.

But for a price.

[Sprig] Any chance we could get some of this candy?

[Maddie] No way.

[caws] Good-bye, Kurt.

I'm not sure if all this was a blessing

or a curse. [caws]

It was literally a curse, Anne.

Thanks for helping us, Maddie.

And sorry the engagement had to end like this.

Friends?

Friends.

Whoa! I can't wait to hang out.

[owl hoots]

[snoring, croaking]

[glugs] Meh.

[gasps]

What? You got a better way to eat ants off the floor?

Sheesh.
