"Cracking Mrs. Croaker" is the second segment of the fourteenth episode of the first season of Amphibia, and the twenty eighth episode overall.
It premiered on July 9, 2019 alongside "Snow Day".[2]
Synopsis
In an effort to make Mrs. Croaker like him, Sprig digs up a secret from her past.
Plot
Sprig happily walks about town greeting everyone and getting jovial responses from them. When he tries getting a friendly greeting from Sadie Croaker, he is surprised to see that she does not return the compliment. He tries to get some kind of response only to be met with silence. He tells Anne, Polly, and Hop Pop, but they all meet his sadness with indifference. Anne relates to how an acquaintance of her's named Jamie Kreiger had given her a similar treatment and that she had chosen to ignore her altogether. Sprig completely mishears Anne's suggestion and doubles down on trying to find some way for Mrs. Croaker to like him.
He tells Anne that he will break into Mrs. Croaker's house and find her "hopes and dreams" and make them come true. He successfully gets inside her house after she leaves with Anne and Polly following him. They discover a chest of old photos of a surprisingly young and attractive Croaker along with photos of a man named Jonah. Believing that he's her lost love, Sprig decides to find him and reunite them. He easily locates Jonah who eagerly prepares to meet with Mrs. Croaker. They head back to her house, but much to Sprig, Polly and Anne's surprise, Jonah had come to kill Croaker rather then being her long lost love.
Mrs. Croaker reveals hidden fighting skills and fights back before finally getting Archie, her pet spider, to web up Jonah. She then tells the kids to not tell anyone about what just happened. Sprig breaks down and reveals that he just wanted to get her to like him. Croaker, however, finds his goal foolish as he cannot please everyone and admits that the only reason she does not like him is because his "big eyes and goofy smile rub [her] the wrong way". Croaker adds that she does appreciate him going through all the trouble and that she can learn to like him. Sprig then happily dances around proclaiming that Croaker likes him, much to her annoyance.

- This episode and "Snow Day" use the same credits but with a winter-themed version, even though both aired in the summer.
- This episode (along with its sister episode) was later uploaded to YouTube on February 7, 2022,[3] making these the fifth episodes (following "Anne or Beast?"/"Best Fronds", "Prison Break", "The Dinner"/"Battle of the Bands" and "The Shut-In!") to later be uploaded in full to YouTube.

- Anne learns from Sprig and Polly that the walls of the Plantar home aren't soundproof, making it hard to give the family peace, quiet, and privacy.
- Hop Pop yodels himself to sleep every night, which Anne had assumed was "a stray animal" until being told otherwise.
Continuity
- Mrs. Croaker warns Anne, Sprig, and Polly to keep her conflict with Jonah confidential, hence why the events of this episode are not brought up again.
- Nevertheless, two details from this episode are brought up in future episodes:
- The walls of the Plantar Farm are revealed to not be soundproof, which allowed Anne to overhear Hop Pop leaving the house to dig up the Calamity Box in "After the Rain".
- Mrs. Croaker is revealed to be skilled in combat. She would later use said skills against the Dwarf Frobots in "Turning Point" and as the leader of the frog army in "The Beginning of the End".
- Nevertheless, two details from this episode are brought up in future episodes:
Edits
- In the Disney+ subtitles, when Sprig says "[gasps] Oh, my gosh, they're about to flirt", it's replaced with "[gasps] Oh, my gosh, They're about to--" as censoring.

- Driving Miss Daisy - The title "Cracking Mrs. Croaker" is a reference to the movie Driving Miss Daisy.
