Dialogue
[It's a stormy day in Wartwood. Anne snuggles in the comfort of the Plantars' basement.]
Anne
[sighs] Nothing like sleeping to the sound of rain.
[Anne happily lays down. Suddenly, the door slams open.]
Hop Pop
Anne! Move! This is the third time I've called you!
Anne
What? No, it isn't.
Hop Pop
No? Okay, then. This is the first time I'm calling you. Let's go! We got work to do.
[Hop Pop, Anne, Sprig, and Polly are all gathered in the living room.]
Hop Pop
Okay, we got a full day of hard work ahead of us. [He hands out rain gear to the kids.] Here ya go, put this on! Polly... there you go, sweetie.
Sprig
Rain gear? Hop Pop, we're frogs! [He takes his jacket off.] We should actually be taking off our clothes. Woo hoo!
Hop Pop
Keep your pants on, boy. This here ain't no ordinary rainstorm.
[Hop Pop shows Wally struggling to walk in the worsening rainstorm. Wally gets hit by a wayward tree blowing in the extreme winds.]
Wally
[screams from outside]
Hop Pop
We gotta cover up the crops before they're destroyed! It'll be hours of back-breaking work in the mud and the muck. Thankless, hard, character-building labor--
[As Hop Pop says this, Anne begins to look more and more unsure. Suddenly, Anne interrupts Hop Pop with a forceful cough.]
Sprig
Whoa, Anne. Everything all right?
Anne
[warily] No. I think I'm... sick!
[Anne falls to the ground in a round of forceful coughing. Hop Pop goes up to investigate.]
Hop Pop
Hmm. [checks Anne's skin] No slimy coating. Well, that's good. [He grabs Anne's tongue.] Great grubs! Your tongue has shrunken to an unnaturally tiny size!
Anne
[slaps Hop Pop away] Stop it! I've got human stuff going on that you don't know anything about-- [coughs] Oh no. Sounds like I've got a bad case of the...mocha lattes!
Hop Pop
[gasps] That sounds horrible! Come on, kids. Let's stay away from Anne and her illness. [Hop Pop, Sprig and Polly head for the door.] Rest up, Anne. We'll handle the work today.
Sprig
Feel better, Anne!
Polly
Rest up!
Anne
[weakly] I'll try my best. Bye. [The Plantars leave. Once alone, Anne immediately perks back up.] You done did it again, girl! Woo! [giggles]
[Anne celebrates with a montage of her goofing off in the Plantar house alone. She firsts drums on the pots and pans on the kitchen... only to have one of the hanging pots be a still live mantis head. The insect hisses, prompting a shriek form Anne. We then see her dancing on top of the dinner table, which tops over.]
Anne
Whoa!
[Some time later, Anne enjoys a relaxing, candlelit bath. While she tends to her nails, we pan over to see Hop Pop, Sprig and Polly hanging on for dear life as the storm winds worsen. Scene cut to Anne trying on Sprig's hat and jacket. She giggles as she pretends to hop up and down. Another cut sees Anne painting her toenails while the Plantars, unbeknownst to her, get swept up in a tornado outside her window. The montage ends with Anne sliding down the stairs, knocking down some barrels in a game of human bowling.]
Anne
Yeah!
[Anne is now watching a video on her phone.]
Man on TV
Cynthia, my abs...they've been... ab-ducted!
"Cynthia" lets out a horrified scream.
Narrator
Ab-Snatchers II!
Anne
[eating ice cream on the couch] Best... decision... ever!
[The camera pans over to the door where Hop Pop, Sprig, and Polly come back into the house looking worse for wear. Pan back to Anne who resumes her sick act. Her phone and ice cream are nowhere to be found and she is wrapped with a blanket.]
Anne
(weakly) Oh. You're back? I hope you got along without-- (suddenly talking normally) Whoa! Are you guys okay?
The rain soaked Plantars all look miserable. Hop Pop and Polly in particular. Pan to Hop Pop who looks to be sweating as he sniffs mucus up his nose and coughs. Pan next to Polly, who sneezes so hard she launches herself in the air and lands in a moaning heap. Her eyes are completely swollen. Pan next to Sprig who looks... normal.
Sprig
Oh, me? I'm fine.
Hop Pop
Looks like Polly and I have come down with something, too.
Polly
Who said that?
Sprig
It was brutal out there, Anne. Good thing you stayed inside. I mean, sure, the work would have gone much quicker if you were with us, but you probably just would have gotten sicker.
Anne
(feeling guilty) Yep, sicker.
Sprig
But nobody has to worry, because I'm going to take care of everyone...Ah, ah... A-CHOO!!! (Sprig loses control of his tongue) Oh, no!
Hop Pop
Yep, it got Sprig, too.
Anne
Wait, what? So you're all sick?
Polly
Sure looks that way. (Due to her swollen eyes, she hops into the trash instead of her normal bucket.)
Sprig
Polly, no! (He loses control of his tongue again and trips over himself.)
Hop Pop
(various objects sticking to him) Oh, dang. I'm sticky.
Polly
Who's gonna take care of us?
Feeling bad about her fakeout, Anne speaks up.
Anne
Me. I'm gonna take care of you guys. (She picks Polly up from the trash)
Sprig
But, Anne, you're sick too. (his tongue knocks him over) Ah!
Anne
(She fakes a cough.) Sure am, buddy. But you're all way more important to me.
Sprig
Thanks, Anne.
Hop Pop
Wow, that's uncharacteristically generous of you.
Anne
Aw, you know, I do what I can. Now let's get you all better!
Polly sneezes and starts to ricochet all over the walls.
Polly
Kill me...!
Anne puts on some kitchen gloves and ties her hair back with a bandana. She starts by wrapping Hop Pop in a blanket, but catches some of his secretions on her gloves. She grunts as she tries to shake it off, only for it to splash in her face.
Anne
Ah, it's in my mouth!
Hop Pop
Sorry, Anne.
Cut to Anne giving Polly some eye drops.
Polly
Ah, sweet relief. Give me that! (she grabs the eye drops and gives herself a bigger dose, which pours out of her eyelids) Oh...
Anne
(Approaches Sprig and his loose hanging tongue) Hmm...
Anne tries several times to put Sprig's tongue back in his mouth, only for the tongue to stick back out. A few more quick attempts later, Anne ties Sprig's head down with a handkerchief, which works. Cut to the Plantar kitchen. Anne is cooking.
Anne
Finally, my famous broccoli kale super soup. Now, with cricket! (Anne puts in a cricket leg, which kicks back to her face) Oh, this one's a kicker! Oh, I almost forgot. Sprig's favorite. Mushrooms! (Anne adds a red mushroom from the counter into the pot) Oof, smells awful. Eh, probably a good thing. Soup's on!
Cut to the dinner table. The Plantars all eat the soup.
Anne
So... feeling any better?
Sprig's tongue suddenly sticks out, spilling the soup on Polly and Hop Pop.
Polly
No.
Hop Pop
Eh.
Anne
Oh, man. I thought that would've helped for sure. (She looks down and notices something) Uh, Hop Pop, are your legs normally that red?
Hop Pop looks down and sees that his legs have turned red. He looks terrified.
Hop Pop
This can't be good.
The family all gather in Hop Pop's study room. Hop Pop looks up the condition in one of his books called "Ye Olde Ailments".
Hop Pop
Yep, it's red leg, all right.
Anne
Is that a bad thing?
Polly
Uh, yeah, Anne. The red leg works its way up your body, and when it finally covers you completely, you... you...
Hop Pop
You depart from this ungrateful world.
Anne
What?!?
Hop Pop
It's okay, kids. Just pick a corner for me to pass away in. (he points to a corner) That one'll do!
Anne
No! We are not picking a corner. There's gotta be something we can do to fix this. There has to be. (Sprig puts his tongue back in his mouth and continues reading the guide book.)
Sprig
The guide book says red leg can be cured by wading in a mineral pond high in the mountains.
Hop Pop
Mountains? Ha! The journey alone would do me in. (walks over to the corner) Nope, nope, nope. I'm just gonna get ready for the hereafter in my corner.
Hop Pop lies down in the corner, covering himself with a newspaper and nudging a vase next to him.
Anne
Hey, stop it! Sorry, Hop Pop, but you are going to live to see another day. I am gonna take you to that mineral pond!
Hop Pop, Polly & Sprig
Yay!
Anne
Uh, even though I'm still pretty sick. (coughs)
(Sprig loses control of his tongue and accidentally knocks Hop Pop over.)
Hop Pop
Dang it, boy!
Sometime later, Anne rides Bessie to the mineral pond while the sick Hop Pop, Sprig, and Polly are confined to a wooden cart, bouncing back and forth. They soon arrive at the "Peak of Health", where the mineral pond is high atop the tall mountain. Determined, Anne forges ahead.
Anne
Hiyah! Come on, Bessie! How you doing back there, Hop Pop?
Hop Pop
Just fine, considering the red is up to my stomach. (He lifts his shirt to show how far the red spread)
Anne
What?!? (She pulls Bessie to a complete stop)
Sprig
It's spreading quicker than we thought. (He starts to play Hop Pop's stomach like a drum. Hop Pop slaps Sprig down.)
Hop Pop
Knock it off, boy! Just find a nice tree to leave me under.
Polly
Better make that a tree for two. (Her tail has turned red. She sneezes again but is tied to a red brick with rope to keep her from flying away from the cart.)
Anne
(gasps) Polly, too?!? I have to get this cart moving faster.
Anne hops off of Bessie and unhitches the wagon.
Sprig
Anne, what are you doing?
Anne begins to pull the cart herself, leaving a chirping Bessie behind.
Anne
If Bessie can't get you there, then I'll get you there myself!
While Anne pulls the cart, a crow lands and pecks on her head.
Anne
Ow, ow...
Anne shoos the bird away, only to have an alligator creature chomp on her leg. She loses her balance, sending herself and the cart backwards. She recovers by pushing the cart from behind while other smaller creatures keep biting her. Eventually they make it to a plateau, where Anne collapses in exhaustion. Hop Pop, Sprig, and Polly cheer.
Anne
(breathing heavily) How... much... further?
Sprig
We just have to cross this plateau.
The plateau ahead is covered with hot geysers, one of which destroys a passing giant fly.
Anne
We have to cross that? I'll never get the cart to the other side.
Sprig
Sure you can--
A nearby geyser destroys the cart, sending Hop Pop and Polly tumbling out.
Sprig
Well, not now, of course.
Hop Pop
There's no shame in failure, Anne. Just pick a nice rock-- (Anne picks up Hop Pop with Sprig and Polly holding onto her.)
Anne
No! No rock, no tree. We are going to that mineral pond.
Anne now carries all three Plantars and scopes out the gushing geysers.
Anne
Okay, okay. Watch the timing, Anne...
Anne makes a mad dash across the geysers while the Plantars yell and scream through a few close calls. With one final leap, Anne makes it across the other side.
All
Yeah!
Sprig
I knew you'd get us here. And it's a good thing, too. (He spreads his arms and reveals his legs have turned red.)
Anne
Sprig! You too?! Come on! Let's get to that spring. Right around the-- Wait. These are stairs? (The stairs in question are tiny ledges spread far apart.) I can't walk up these!
Hop Pop
Ain't for walking. They're for hopping.
Sprig
The stairs are made for frogs.
Anne
(groans)
Hop Pop
Well, we tried.
A giant fly buzzes right by them towards the top. Anne gets an idea.
Anne
Hang on, everyone! (she runs for the ledge with the Plantars firmly in tow.)
Hop Pop
Anne, what are you doing?!
Anne leaps off the edge and falls down, only to hitch a ride on one of the giant flies. The Plantars scream as they all start to fly over the mineral pond.
Anne
We gotta jump for it!
All four of them jump down and fall into the pond. Moments after jumping in, they all gasp for breath. After a quick check, they all begin to celebrate. By now, Hop Pop, Sprig and Polly are all red.
Anne
Yay, we made it!
Polly
You saved us!
Hop Pop
You did it, Anne!
Anne
I knew you guys would be okay. Thank goodness, too, because... Wait. Shouldn't the red be going away?
Hop Pop
In theory.
Anne
Sprig, what does the book say?
Sprig
(reading the book) The pond should cure us instantly. It's... not working.
Anne
What? The book was wrong?
Hop Pop
Books are wrong all the time. A lot more than you'd think. (Sprig loses control of his tongue, hitting Hop Pop again.) Dang it, boy!
Anne
This is all my fault.
Hop Pop
No, Anne. You did more than anyone could've asked of you.
Anne
(begins to sob)
Polly
Yeah, you're the best.
Anne
(sobs even harder)
Sprig
Even though you're as sick as we are, (His tongue slowly loosens from his mouth.) you still tried to save us. You're... a hero.
Anne
But... but... (shouts) BUT I'M NOT SICK!
All Plantars
WHAAAT?!?
Sprig coughs and stutters trying to keep his tongue under control.
Anne
(sighs) I never was. I faked it so I could take a day off. (sobs) I swear, as long as I live, never to fake being sick again!
The Plantars comfort Anne.
Hop Pop
Don't be ridiculous, kiddo. You might've just gotten sick with the rest of us.
Sprig
Yeah, we'd probably all be dying now.
Polly
At least someone made it.
Anne
You guys are the best.
They all hug. The sun begins to set.
Hop Pop
That's enough, now. It's time to let us go.
Anne
No!
Hop Pop
Goodbye, Anne.
Hop Pop, Sprig, and Polly float on their backs, their eyes closed and their arms crossed on their chests.
Anne
No! (sighs) Rest in peace, you beautiful frogs.
Three giant flies screech like eagles overhead. The music reaches a crescendo for the three frogs. A few short moments later, the music abruptly stops when Hop Pop opens his eyes.
Hop Pop
Uh, anyone dead, yet?
Sprig
Not yet!
Polly
Present.
Hop Pop
Hmm. That's odd. Unless... Sprig, get over here and show me that book. (Sprig opens the book and takes it to him.) Hmm, it says here red leg isn't the only thing that can cause a frog to turn red.
Anne, Sprig & Polly
(surprised) What?
Hop Pop
Yeah. It says there's a mushroom that gives you the exact same symptom.
Sprig
But we didn't eat any mushrooms.
Anne
Sprig, turn around!
Sprig
Okay. (Sprig shows the page to Anne, revealing the red mushroom from earlier.)
Anne
That mushroom was in the kitchen! (sobbing) I put it in the soup I gave you! (She hugs the Plantars)
Hop Pop
That mushroom ain't for eating, Anne! I use it to scrub the pots and wash the bathroom floors, and... clean Bessie's stable.
Sprig
Looks like we were just normal sick.
Anne
(sobs happily)
Sprig
Uh, Anne?
Anne
(sobbing) You're gonna live! Liiive!
Polly
Is she gonna stop?
Anne
(sobbing) Liiive!
Hop Pop
Just let it happen, kids. Just let it happen.
(End of episode.)
