Look, I created the stones to see how mortals would handle unlimited power. Turns out... not that well!

The Calamity Gems, also known as Calamity Stones were three stones that possessed "unlimited power", created by the Guardian. They were used to power the Calamity Box while also being able to imbue their "chosen heroes" with their power, such as Anne Boonchuy, Sasha Waybright, and Marcy Wu. After Anne was gifted with all of their power, the gems are shattered with a shard of each later made by the Guardian remaining. The shards would then be used to take the girls back home to Los Angeles, California, USA, Earth before disintegrating along with the Calamity Box for good.

Appearance[]

The Calamity Gems were three diamond-cut gemstones smaller than a ping-pong ball with each having a color to represent a certain virtue: blue representing heart, green representing wit, and red/pink representing strength.

When they were drained, the gemstone colors were pale blue, pale green and pink.

Pre-history[]

Mother Olm reciting the Olm prophecy, "Mother of Olms"

The three gems were created at least 10,000 years ago by the Cosmic Guardian as a test to see how mortals would handle unlimited power, in order to find a worthy successor for the watcher of the multiverse, so it can retire. According to their temples, each stone reflects a different trait and looks for two characteristics in a person in order to qualify: the green stone (Wit) looks for both intelligence and humility, the red stone (Strength) looks for strength and persistence, and the blue stone (Heart) looks for empathy and responsibility.

It was foretold in Olm prophecy that three chosen warriors represented by these gems would be summoned to save the inhabitants of Amphibia from the worst version of themselves. The newts' ancestors somehow came to possess the gems. Soon, the gems were embedded into the Calamity Box, which allowed the newts to travel to other worlds and progress their civilization with the technology the box and the gems provided. However, the newts, led by King Aldrich, abused this power, calling it their "birthright" and "proof that they are destined to conquer." Through the Calamity Box, the newts used what they learned of the inhabitants they enslaved to create the Core before the gems were lost along with the box on Earth, an act committed deliberately by the frog named Leif (an ancestor of the current-day Plantar family) to prevent a prophesized dark future for Amphibia from materializing.

The prophecy arises[]

A millennium later, three teenage girls found the box and were transported into Amphibia, and unknowingly became infused with the mystical power of the gems. One of them, Marcy Wu, was transported to Newtopia, and meets a descendant of the Newt conquerors, King Andrias, who alongside the Core created a plan to lure the other girls to recharge the gems, neutralizing the prophecy and giving up their powers in favor of "returning" to Earth and allowing Andrias and the Core to establish multiversal domination using the Calamity Box and its gems.

Meanwhile, one of the teenage girls, named Anne Boonchuy, landed in a swamp known as Wartwood Swamp, witnessing an attack on its inhabitants by two mantises, one green and one red. Seeing a new friend of hers about to be hurt, Anne unknowingly taps into her gem powers and overpowers the beast. This is the first instance where a character activates some form of gem powers in the series.

Restoring the gems[]

When he first met the teenager Marcy Wu, Andrias was contacted by the Core to lure her and her friends into three different temples to charge the box; Marcy, oblivious to the king's actual plans with the Box, brought Anne and the Plantars to the first temple, which was a test of wit, the second which was a test of heart (where Anne left with the blue gem partially charged) and the third which was a test of strength. The latter in fact was when the other teenage girl, named Sasha Waybright, returned to aid Anne, Marcy and the Plantars through the temple's challenges. By the end of the episode, all three girls are reunited. However, Sasha has a different plan; as soon as the Box is fully charged and returned to Andrias, she would take it for herself to rule over Amphibia.

The Calamity awakens[]

As soon as they return to Newtopia, this is realized with Sasha nabbing the box and sending everyone else below to be locked up. After a brief rebellion and war, Andrias returns and takes the box to realize his plan of world domination. After a brief fight, which ends with Sprig being thrown down the window, Anne's calamity powers awaken and she is able to best Andrias in one-on-one combat.

Anne would go on to use her gem powers sparingly throughout her time on Earth to stop the Cloak-Bot, and to power Terri's interdimensional portal. She uses it again in a rage when the three armies of frogs, newts and toads are seemingly at each others' throats at a time of desperate measures to get the Wartwood Resistance together before Andrias' invasion.

Gems, unchained[]

Soon, it is about time for Andrias' great invasion of Earth. He uses the charged Box to open a portal to the human realm, where he begins his invasion with the Core by his side.

Anne uses her gem powers to fight Andrias' mech in Los Angeles, California.

Stopping the phantom menace[]

With the invasion halted and Andrias and the Core defeated, the latter goes to desperate measures to ensure its victory. It possesses the moon and slowly pushes it towards Amphibia. Mother Olm appears, suggesting to Anne the usage of all three gems combined to obliterate the Core.

Valeriana then transfers the three gems' powers to each of the girls, realizing the prophecy and allowing the Calamity Trio to rise up strong to defeat the Core and its minions. However, the Core pushes harder and Sasha and Marcy's powers are fading due to not having much experience with them as Anne did, so Anne, despite their and Sprig's pleas, takes all three gems and combines them to obliterate the phantom threat of the Core forever, but at a cost - Mother Olm warned that the usage of all three gems' powers combined would obliterate not only the target, but the owner, too. Due to this, Anne effectively sacrificed herself to save Amphibia, taking the gems with her.

The gems' end[]

After a brief but pivotal chat with the Guardian of the Gems itself, turning down its offer to let Anne become the new guardian of the multiverse in the afterlife, Anne is revived by the Guardian copying her before she passed on, and returns with three gem shards, which were used up making the final portal to Earth. The Calamity Trio, now heroes of Amphibia, leave for Earth and the Calamity Box and gems disintegrate and fade away. With their fading, Terri's portal could no longer function properly and allow the Amphibians and humans to see each other again. Regardless, Terri and Mr. X vowed to circumvent this and create some kind of working portal or connection between Earth and Amphibia for as long as they needed to succeed.

Powers and abilities[]

Said by their creator to be gems of "unlimited power," the Calamity Gems are remarkable artifacts that can be used to make civilizations or bring them to ruin. The gems possess a form of intense energy that is incredibly potent and destructive. Even one gem has great power. When channeled through a medium, either an object or person, the Calamity Gems can be used as a perpetual energy source.

  • Phytokinesis: They were capable of making crops grow better and faster many years in the past in ancient lands.
  • Healing: They were capable of healing up wounded Amphibians many years in the past in ancient lands. They were also capable of curing up diseases of Amphibians that touched them.
  • Future sight: They were capable of giving the ones that touched glimpses of the future as seen when they showed Leif what would become of Amphibia if they were still used for evil.
  • Interdimensional travel: Through the Calamity Box, the Gems are capable of opening rainbow-colored interdimensional portals.
  • Energy bestowal: Being raw concentrations of the Calamity power, the gems could empower vessels with their energy. Certain Newtopian technologic weapons were created to use the three Gems for their own objectives. Through the Calamity Box, they were able to power various devices connected to the Box, including Newtopia Castle and its weaponry. However, when connected to their chosen hosts, the three gems' powers infused within each of the warrior and enhanced their abilties greatly, granting them access to colorful empowered forms. Each host uses their respective gem individually, however, through a Secret Spell, the three gems can give their power to one single host at the same, giving them the full power of the gems and powering them to the absolute max. Even with so much power, said spell is only possible once as both the gems and the user are destroyed in the process.
    • Enhanced strength, and durability: In these forms, the hosts' physical capabilities are highly enhanced managing to easily dodge fast attacks, survive damage that would cost them their lives and even becoming strong enough to even move the moon away from Amphibia with their bare hands.
    • Enhanced speed/flight: In these forms, the hosts have their speed highly enhanced and are capable of levitating and flying around at will, during flight they can be so fast that it looks like teleportation and were even capable of flying out of Amphibia's atmosphere in mere seconds.
    • Energy manipulation: In these forms, the hosts possess Calamity energy flowing through their bodies which they can use in many ways such as enhancing their attacks.
    • Energy constructs: Through their Calamity energy, the hosts are capable of creating objects to aid them in battle such as a tennis racket, cat-faced tennis balls, a pair of Heron wings, cheerleader pompoms and a twenty-sided dice.
    • Telekinesis: In these forms, the hosts are capable of moving objects around using their mind.
    • Destructive beam: In this form, the host has the ability to shoot a gigantic beam attack that was strong enough to completly destroy Amphibia's moon. However, this will also result in the cost of the user's life.

Trivia[]

  • Despite its name, the red gem is most often represented by the colors pink or magenta.
  • As seen when Leif claims the gems have warned her about the future apocalyptic events, when Andrias claims the gems have picked Anne as their "champion" to fight against him and finally when Anne asks the gems themselves for their power, which they respond to, implies that the gems do have minds of their own. However, there is no solid confirmation of it.
    • After it's revealed The Guardian is the creator of the three stones, it's very likely the actions given by them were actually The Guardian's doing.
  • It is shown that each gem's trait represent Anne, Sasha, and Marcy's characters. This is supported by the challenges and color motifs of the three temples matching the respective gems they represent, and the tests correspond to each of the girls:
    • First temple - Wit: Marcy is tech-savvy and highly intelligent. She willingly gave up the final challenge for Anne and the Plantars' sake upon realizing the Flipwart game is unwinnable.
    • Second temple - Heart: Anne is emotional and cares about others. She was challenged over and over by Valeriana into admitting her mistakes and bad deeds from the past, and vowed to learn from them.
    • Third temple - Strength: Sasha is a leader and determined. She used the mental strength within her to get back up and defeat the Stone Monster thanks to believing in Anne and Marcy's encouragement.
    • Even though each Gem is shown to represent a trait all Gems have exactly the same effects and powers when used by a being.
  • The Calamity Gems may be inspired by the Chaos Emeralds from the Sonic the Hedghog franchise, due to their similar appearance and ability to grant super transformations to those who can harness their power. The word calamity even has a similar meaning and usage to the word chaos. The "Ultimate Calamity" form of Anne also looks similar to Hyper Sonic.
    • The gems also function similarly to the Triforce of The Legend of Zelda franchise, due to both relics beings in sets of three, with each granting certain abilities based on the virtue of their chosen wielders.
  • As shown by the blue gem, the transformation granted by the gems seem to have three different levels of power. When Anne was on Earth and connected to the blue stone while it was on Amphibia, her transformation only had a blue aura, blue eyes and without any branches on her hair; when Anne was in Amphibia where the blue stone was, she gained a blue aura, blue hair, long branches out of her hair and blue eyes; and finally, when Anne absorbed the stone, she gained an armor set along with the aura, eyes and hair. Marcy theorizes the differences in power depend on the synergy among the stones and their host, thus when all three stones are used together with their warrior, this affords their warriors the highest level possible.
  • Whenever the host speaks when powered up, their voice will be accompanied by a deep reverb.
  • Anne is the only member in the Calamity Trio to use the powers more than one time and the first and last to do so.
  • The colors of the gems seem to be inspired by Anne's prototype design, which most notably had blue hair, but also had pink and green on her outfit and other parts of her color palette as well.
